My client is a professional membership body for finance specialists. The members are rigorously tested to ensure they meet my client’s required standards to be given membership, and they must pass my client’s testing annually to retain their member status. The standard of membership is widely regarded as the highest standard in the sector and as a result is highly sought after and prized.
The sector is rapidly growing, and this is reflected in the growth of the organisation. The organisation has built a very good reputation with the government and given the regular legislative changes that impact the profession it is essential for the postholder to have good public affairs skills and an ability to influence at the highest levels.
It is imperative that the organisation upholds its membership standards, and the Chief Executive’s role as independent arbiter is critical in achieving this. The successful applicant will be able to assimilate complex technical information in order to consider evidence and be accountable for sound decision-making.
The chief executive is the figurehead for the organisation so the successful applicant must have experience in an ambassadorial role and experience of successfully challenging misperceptions would be particularly beneficial. The ability to be a spokesperson for the organisation is essential, so the successful post-holder will need to be confident in representing technical views to a lay audience. In addition, the chief executive is also required to deliver presentations at industry events so will also need the ability to engage with audiences that have a more in depth understanding of the issues.
The Chief Executive is supported by a fulltime Head of Membership and independent consultants including a marketing consultant, a research consultant, and technical advisors.
The role is home-based, although frequent travel to meetings is required, which may include some overnight stays depending on the location of the post holder.
Experience of leading membership organisations
Experience of policy, government, public affairs
Ability to quickly assimilate technical/complex information (whilst not essential, an understanding of employment and/or tax legislation would be useful)
Ability to succeed working alone
Ethical belief in what is right, committed to highest professional standards
Resilience in defending the organisation
